Carmel by the Sea.

This town is much deserving of its own blog - for it is the greatest, smallest, quaintest, and loveliest of all towns I have ever visited. Only a few miles in distance, nestled amongst the most beautiful beach, and filled to the brim with boutiques, bakeries, and cottages that will take your breath, and keep it for a bit longer than you'd expect.

Before I travel to a new place, I do my research to find the best of the best. And in all my readings, I always came across the Tuck Box. This is one of the fairy tale cottages of Carmel, built by Hugh Comstock in the 1920's for his wife to make her dolls. What a lovely story, and an even more lovely shop. We arrived and were seated in the outdoor eating area. With only a glance of the menu, I knew I would have the tea and sconces, for I had been told by a million Google hits that this is what I should have. And indeed, all my Google friends were correct. The most unbelievable sconces were placed in front of me, smothered in cream, then topped with a jam that I could have ate by the spoonfuls... Ololliberry is the name of the jam, and it can be ordered online from the tuck box website. The tea is also an absolute delight, served steaming hot and strained yourself. Add a dollop of cream and enjoy! Since the tuck box is somewhat like the mother load of Carmel’s fairy tale cottages, they have a map that will inform and direct you to all the cottages throughout the town. It is hand written and illustrated and a sight to see. I scooped up every bit of information I could get, and then headed out to find Hansel, the original 'doll' house.  We found it and loved it, and the Gretel cottage was just around the corner. It was so amazing to see these little wonders.

After leaving the Tuck Box, we passed through dozens of Inns, which is where you stay if you visit Carmel by the Sea... and this was one that captured me. The flowers surrounding the building and the feel it had, made me decide that when I return, this is where I will stay!
When walking around Carmel, you will notice that the shops have little passageways that lead to different shops. For instance, you walk into a particular shop, and the back of the store opens up to a whole other set of places you would never have known about. This is how we found the magical mosaic tile staircase that I realllllllly want in my home! We were shopping in a Christmas boutique for our 2010 ornament, and these stairs led you to out to another set of wonderful little shops. Just amazing.

After walking through the town and taking in as much as possible, we decided to check out Carmel’s beach. Wow. Not only is it one of the most beautiful beaches I've seen, it is overlooked by the famous pebble beach golf course. And another fact about the fabulous town called Carmel by the Sea - locals and visitors gather on the beach in the evenings to watch the sun set. Yes, a town like no other. If you ever have a chance to go, definitely take the opportunity!

Goodbye, Carmel... you will be greatly missed.

away we go to northern california...

part two.

What a joy to have this experience. I have read about, heard from people, and seen in movies the magnificent views of the pacific coast highway (PCH), also known as highway 1.  Until you experience this for yourself, you cannot imagine the beauty it holds. The drive from Los Angeles to Monterey should have taken about 6.5 hours. It took us 8.5. We stopped countless times, pulling off the road to just stop and soak in every ounce we could possibly get.
our first glimpse of the PCH, and pulling off the road to embrace it!

We drove miles and miles on the sides of winding and twisting cliffs. There were times when the windows were down and the music was blaring... The car temperature would read 85 degrees, and five minutes later we would be freezing and notice the temp dropped to 65. There were moments when it was a bit scary, and silence was all we heard. It was truly an experience like no other.
2 different stopping points on our drive for a view of the Monterey Peninsula
When we reached Monterey County, Big Sur would be our first real stop. Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park holds a wonder of the world - McWay Falls. This is a waterfall that pours into an untouched ocean; the only viewings are from a trail, which makes it so much more astonishing. We snapped a few pictures, marveled in its beauty, and then headed on for more.
McWay Falls
Crossing over the Bixby Bridge was another profound moment in Big Sur, considering once you were across the bridge, you began up the side of a cliff that seemed to never end!

We had reservations at a bed and breakfast in the Pacific Grove district of Monterey, but you reach Carmel by the Sea before getting to Monterey, and Carmel was top on my to-do list. So we stopped there first for a quick bite before checking in our room. It was after lunch that I had my first glimpse of the Tuck Box... More to come on that later! (i will post another blog completely on Carmel by the Sea - for it is well deserving of it's own...)

When we arrived at our amazing bed and breakfast, we were openly welcomed and invited to join the guests for wine and cheese hour... and of course we did! We mingled and got dinner suggestions, then made our way to our room. Another surprise - a third floor bedroom with a balcony holding a view of the ocean. I was more than delighted! When booking our room, we decided against staying directly on the coast. The thing about Monterey that we didn't know- it's like a well-built theater... Everyone is on an incline, a bit higher than the one before you... Therefore, everyone has a glimpse of the ocean! Fantastic! We rested for a quick minute, got ready and headed to downtown Monterey to see what she offered.
Here is where I will inform you of my husbands love for John Steinbeck. It's actually more than love. He and his writings have been like a guru for David, so being in Monterey County, home of Steinbeck, made my man like a giddy little schoolboy!
Entering Monterey’s famous Cannery Row...
Cannery Row, Monterey, California
It's just as it is written. A beautiful coastal town boasting shops and restaurants, each begging for you to sample what they have to offer. I nearly filled up on samplings of clam chowder before we got to our restaurant! It was almost an insult if you didn't try what they had, and I love clam chowder... So I wasn't turning anyone down! We had dinner on the pier overlooking the ocean, shared in the joy that we were experiencing, then set sail to see what more we could discover.
We walked through the little town shops, went to the beach for a view of the setting sun, then decided to end the evening with a drink. We ended back to Carmel, a short 5-10 minute drive, and landed at Hog’s Breath Inn, owned by Clint Eastwood. I will tell you that the Hog’s Breath Pale Ale is the BEST choice you can make! Delish! This place was built so amazing, as is everything in Carmel by the Sea, but this place was centered around nature. Natural cut wood tables, trees growing from the floors in the middle of the outdoor dining area, just a very natural ambience; simply beautiful.
I made a friend :)

It had been a fabulous day, and also a fantastic place to end! Back to our room and we were asleep before we could say goodnight.
Exhaustion had begun to take its toll.

Day one of northern California had been one to never forget.

Los Angeles to San Diego

After a short 24 hours, I decided that David and I should someday live here... (he laughs because I do this everywhere we go).
The morning started with intelligencia, sitting outside sharing cups of coffee and conversation. I would really like to start every morning this way. We then spent a quick and very lovely hour getting pedicures! Yes, may man got a pedi with me... And he loved it - as would everyone!
We spent the afternoon in Griffith Park and the observatory. We picnicked there, under a lovely view of the Hollywood sign, which is also something I would enjoy doing every day.
We shopped for a while before getting ready for our VERY SPECIAL NIGHT!!!!!!!!!!! Yes folks, this was Band of Horses Night!!!!
Mexican was for dinner - delish, and we made our way to the Greek theater for the show we've been waiting for. Our seats were grand, thanks to mark, and the show was fabulous, as usual!
To top it all... They sang detlef schrempf, our wedding song.
It. Was. Perfection.
seeing Band of Horses
Off to San Deigo...

After the show, we called it a night… for tomorrow held another busy day.
Mark saw Anita off to Greece, and we headed to Orange County to meet up with Butch, Sharon, and Billy for breakfast. I love them so freaking much! We chowed down, and then were San Diego bound for a spectacular ballgame. Yes, the Cincinnati reds stomped the padres. 12-2. Ballgame food consisted of many hot dogs for the boys, popcorn for me, and a shared foot long 'something made from heaven' between the hubby and myself.
(somehow tasted like a cinnamon doughnut... Say no more)
After the game we hit the seaport area of San Diego for a couple magnificent views, then made our way back to LA to call it a night. We had to repack for our remaining trip to northern California!!!
Part two coming soon!

Hello California...

First, let me start by picking up from my previous blog... My dad. Results of the PET scan showed that the cancer has not spread, and is only in the lung and lymph nodes to the side of the lung!!!!! He is eligible for surgery and things are going grand!!! I couldn't be happier and that news completely made my trip!  He still has a very rough road ahead, but nothing that he cannot conquer!
(This blog is a back-track of our journey throughout the glorious state of California. Forgive me if I overwhelm you with a picture overload).
I spent three days in west Virginia before leaving for California, so when I arrived home at 7pm on Thursday, I had very few hours to pack and sleep before leaving for LA. We left home at 530 a.m. very excited for our destination! One reason I have a love for morning flights... the glorious views as the sun wakes the sky.
Three hours behind our normal time, Los Angeles is alive!!! Leaving the airport and getting our rental car led us to our first surprise... An upgrade :-) we got ourselves a shiny red sports car... And we flew it straight to In-n-Out for a delish lunch! Double-double, animal style!!!!!! (all you vegetarians are dying at this point).
We then met up with Mark, and relaxed a bit before meeting up with Anita for a night on the town. We had a another little pre-dinner surprise... Mark had shared a bottle of Dom Perignon with Anita on the night of their engagement, and saved a glass for us :) We sipped on that deliciousness, then made our way out.
Dinner was at Ford's Filling Station, owned by Harrison Ford's son, and we had the best waiter EVER - Mark Hutchinson!!! :-) Our dinner was more like a feast – Salad, Mac n Cheese like I've never had before, and three different entrees that we all shared (devoured). A bottle of wine was emptied and the night ended around 12:30 (3:30 our time), so we were whipped. Bedtime came easy, and our first day in LA was one of greatness!

Bittersweet.

A quick trip home is a putting it mildly, due to the 6 hours of driving that it takes to get there. But in this case, I needed to be here. I needed to be home.
Today is September 21st. On this day, ten years ago, my first niece was born, Lauren Michelle. I cannot believe she is ten years old. Time goes by so quickly, and my baby girl is becoming a young lady… wow. I am so very proud of her for many reasons; she is super smart and practically obsessed with her school grades, she is a dancing queen, a gymnast, a ballerina, a spelling bee champ, and a crafty little gal, and I love her more than words can say. Happy Birthday to my precious Lala!!!
The reason I journeyed home… my dad has been diagnosed with cancer of the lung, and possibly the lymph nodes and a fear has taken over our family. Though at this point, we are all helpless and playing the waiting game, I had to be with them, all of them… my dad, my mom and my sisters. You always dream of moving away, breaking away from your life and starting in a place all your own… that is until something happens that would make you crawl your way back, on your hands and knees if that’s what it takes.
So here I am… at home. And my dad will be ok, this I know.
Regardless of any situation going on in the Smith Household…my mom will get to work, take charge – and make an apple pie like nobody’s business! God love her!
On a brighter note, I was blessed last week with my seventh niece, Ava Victoria. And she is an absolute beauty!!! Being home gave me the opportunity to spend
time with her, Savannah, and Christian.
I will be leaving on Wednesday to go back to South Carolina, then will have a short amount of time to pack and sleep before flying to California. I have excitement about going, but I’m also reserved with fear about missing something. I know there is nothing that I could do to make anything better, but leaving is so hard when you have a very good reason to stay.
I love my Dad because he is the epitome of what a father should be, and always has been. I just never thought cancer could affect him. But then, who really does? I will end with my favorite picture of the two of us, one of us laughing, as we both always do.

September is here... and fall is NEAR!

I can't believe September is here. It feels like just yesterday I was getting excited to go swimming and to go to the beach... and it's now September. This summer has been so wonderful… two amazing beach trips with our families, a visit with Jane and a trip to the Biltmore, a visit from Jess and Nick - getting krispy creme for breakfast and seeing Jack Johnson, seeing Patty Griffin and The Swell Season... I know I'm leaving out so much - but it was all so wonderful. Now that summer is winding down, and things begin to change....
IT'S TIME FOR FALL!!!!!!!!
Things I'm SO looking forward to...
- Decorating my house with pumpkins and mums and the sweet smells that autumn brings!
- Fall eating - soups and appetizer dishes always put me in a fall mood!
- MARSHALL FOOTBALL!!! This weekend we are going home to celebrate the MU vs. WVU game with family and friends. There will be lots of tailgating going on for this game! Also, my sister is having another sweet baby girl, Ava Victoria, and she should be arriving hopefully around this time!
- My amazing niece Lauren celebrates her tenth birthday... double digits... oh. my. god.
- CALIFORNIA!!!!!! We are leaving on the 24th to go to Cali and I am so very excited. We will be spending the first half with family in LA and seeing BAND OF HORSES at the Greek Theater (so freaking excited), then David and I are heading north to Monterey, Carmel by the Sea, Big Sur, and Salinas - then ending the trip with wine tasting in Santa Barbara... god, I can't freaking wait.
September will be gone before we know it… And October will be upon us! October is my favorite month of the year, and not because it is my birth month… it’s just a fabulous month.  This will be another busy month. Once returning from California, it will be October - and the very next week, we leave for Jekyll Island, GA for David's committee! We are staying on the ocean, and I’m sure I will have lots of down time while he is in meetings…. So I’m packing loads of books and a beach blanket and plan on doing absolutely nothing, which is completely fine by me.

Hope everyone is having a wonderful start to the pre-fall season! Pretty soon the pumpkins and gourds will be available for purchase and our homes will smell of pumpkin spice and cinnamon!
